Crabgrass Control:

One of the most common questions that I get, is “How do I control crabgrass?” Crabgrass is actually quite easy to control, as long as you don’t miss your application window. Crabgrass dies in the fall as it gets colder. As it does so, it drops hundreds of seeds per plant. These seeds sit dormant until spring. In order to control crabgrass, you must put down a barrier of Pre emergent herbicide to keep these seeds from germinating. But when? The timing is easy, but if you miss that window you will deal with crabgrass for another year until you break this life cycle. The rule of thumb is to apply your Pre emergent when SOIL (Not air) temperatures reach 45-50 degrees for several consecutive days. Don’t want to monitor soil temperatures? You can cheat. If you will watch your local area for the Forsythia plants to bloom, this is a heads up that you should make your application. Once the yellow blooms turn to green, you are very close to missing your window. Recommended Pre emergents? I like to apply a fertilizer with my application, so Fertilizer with Pendimethalin, or Dimension works really well.
